Can Rosie read?
Let's think about this. Literacy levels among people at this time were very low - mostly it was Latin and mostly the monks and royals. Until the printing press was invented there was really no need to learn to read. I really don't think I can justify her being literate. Would that spoil things for you?

This doesn't change anything for me but it makes it harder to believe that Flea would allow himself to go so far with someone who was so different from the nobility that he knows he belongs in.
But Imogen, very few people, even in the courts, could read. Sometimes, even the king couldn't read but he would have at least one advisor who could. It wasn't common for women to read at all - so perhaps Rachel can't as well. So, the difficulty is the authenticity versus the 21st Century desires. I think you're right about the class thing (although class wasn't so much as issue apparently in Scotland at this time). I'm going to have to work very carefully on this
I don't mind if she can't read. Can Flea?
